Visiting DC with 9 year old. Where are some good places to go bicycling?

We are visiting next week. I am debating bringing our bikes, but the carrier is a little sketchy, and I'm worried bikes will scratch car on the drive up. Any suggestions for rentals? Ideally, a tandem or tagalong? Also, some good places to ride with no cars, or a wide bike lane. Can you take bikes on Metro? Thank you all.
