Have you flown your bicycle on American Airlines?

I'm going on a ride and must fly to attend. American Airlines states that you can fly your bike for free as a piece of luggage providing it does not exceed 62 inches in overall dimension. Meaning all sides of the box must total up to 62 inches overall. I've built some tight boxes, but this is almost impossible. Does any one have experience with this airline? Any tried box designs? Any Ideas? I'd hate to pay extra for a service that they are offering for free, I can ship via another carrier pretty cheaply. But they say its free... until you view the size limitation.

US $3.00

maybe you could uhhh take it apart?
Well I have had great experiences with AA going to Austin for the Ride for the Roses. If you are a member of USA Cycling they give you a booklet of coupons so you can ship your bike for free. I suggest you join. Normally AA is pretty lax with that kind of thing…they do sponsor USA Cycling i would take your chances with AA.
i thought i read somewhere that AA could fly something like a bike for $40. sounds cheap so it might be wrong. i was trying to fly my bike to Mexico for vacation.
did you take the bike apart? you can pack it tighter if you remove the front wheel, pedals, and handlebars. use lots of bubble wrap to protect your investment.
